The name of the game, not just in real estate but life, is relationship building. As a leasing associate for a commercial real estate company, I talk daily with brokers, individuals from national companies, and other associates all over the country. The key to getting them to pick up your phone call as well as working through a deal is having that relationship formed beforehand.
This is also key in your everyday life. You never know when and where an opportunity will present itself. If you’re like me when I was in college or just starting out in my professional career, you have no idea what you want to spend the rest of your life doing. Don’t stress, you’ve got plenty of time to figure it out. My advice would be to ask anyone and everyone you know to grab a cup of coffee. Pick out people you know, your parents know, parents of friends, from all different industries and pick their brain. Find out what they do and if you could see yourself doing that. You never know where an opportunity will come from.
I am sitting in my office typing this because of one of those “coffee meetings.” I reached out to an individual (through a cold email) in an industry I was interested in to pick his brain. And wouldn’t you know, a day after meeting with me, this person had heard of a company in the industry looking to bring someone new on board and had already sent them my contact info. About a month later, that company would offer me a position that I would gladly accept.
