There’s no bad time to review and adjust.
The most successful people take a step back every once in a while to make sure that they’re getting what they want from life. If you don’t do these steps, bad habits can creep in and send you in the wrong direction. The problem is that it happens so slowly, that you don’t realize it until you’re really far down the wrong path. If you take just a minute and review your surroundings, you’ll make your life a lot easier.
It’s really simple, too. It only takes three questions:
- What went well this year? – It’s important to begin answering this by reviewing what you wanted to accomplish in the past year. Did you get there? What are some of the specific successes to hang your hat on. Go ahead and write them down.
- What didn’t go well this year? – We all hit speed bumps, so what were yours? Did you see them coming or did they blind side you? More importantly, what did you learn from them? This is key, so spend some time here.
- What am I going to do about it going forward? – Knowing what went well and what lessons you learned, what does the next year hold for you? Who do you want to be a year from now, and what actions are going to get you there?
As you begin to answer these questions, keep your core values in mind. Once you’re done, review the answers and make sure you haven’t missed anything. Then take #3 and turn it into specific goals.
The start of a new year is the perfect time to ask these questions. You’ve got a solid year ahead of you, so go make it a great one.
