After college I was overwhelmed with the job possibilities that existed in my field and didn’t know how or where to start. Through research of companies in my area, I found people who had high-level, dream jobs I thought I would enjoy and created a plan to obtain the skills each of those people listed in their job descriptions.
If the person I found with a cool job said they were experienced in crisis PR, I made it a goal to not only learn crisis PR but look for jobs that included communications risks at a lower level that I could learn from. This chameleon approach has allowed me to take small steps in my career and identify areas of personal growth.
My career path isn’t going exactly as I planned fresh out of college, however, these tactics have pushed me to take new positions and learn new skills that I may have otherwise overlooked.
