When you want to create long-term, stable success you have to have a keen sense of self-awareness. This includes a deep understanding of the thoughts and feelings that influence every decision you make. That’s why everyone needs a counselor.
This individual should be an expert in asking the right questions to help you understand your deepest feelings. We go to a doctor once a year for a physical, and we see a dentist regularly to keep our teeth healthy. Why don’t we give the same professional attention to our emotional and mental well-being?
When we spend time in a place that’s entirely focused on our individual self, we’re able to get deeper into exploring our thoughts and emotions. Think about it – since all relationships require some give-and-take, there’s no other relationship where we can focus every thought on ourselves. We have to proactively create a space that allows for that reflection.
Also, since it’s impossible to reflect on our thoughts and feelings without our own biases, we need a 3rd party to help unpack it all. That person will listen as you work through it, asking questions along the way to help you dig deeper. Therefore, we need someone who’s skilled at curating this exploration.
The best part about spending time with a counselor is that you don’t need prior experience. You can literally walk in and say “I don’t know how to start,” and the professional will take it from there. If you’ve experienced some significant trauma in your life, that’s a great place to start. If you haven’t, think of it like a tune up for your car. That regular maintenance can keep you thinking clearly and running smoothly, increasing your chances of success.
Not sure how to find the right counselor? Start with your insurance provider, because there’s likely some great ones covered under your policy. If you’re comfortable talking openly about it, you could also ask some trusted friends who they’ve used (because many of them have…I promise).
Not sure if you’re ready for a face-to-face conversation? That’s totally fine! There’s some great apps that allow you to talk to someone virtually.
Failure to understand your emotions at a deep level can directly obstruct your path to creating success. Whatever you want to get out of life, don’t stand in your own way. Find someone to help you tune up your machine.
Share your leadership experience so others can grow from it!
