On the road to making a great idea real, sometimes you drive the car. Sometimes the idea drives the car and you watch from the passenger seat. And other times, you bounce around in the trunk.
I’m paraphrasing a little, but that analogy comes from comedian Dave Chappelle in Jerry Seinfeld/Netflix’s series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s a great example of 2+ people who share success in a similar field discussing the finer details of their craft (always enlightening). This particular episode does a great job showing the similarities and differences of the success of two very successful comedians with very different approaches and backgrounds.
At one point, the two discuss how to know which ideas to follow, and they agree that a lot of times you don’t know. Sometimes, in order for greatness to occur, you have to get yourself out of the way. The same holds true for creating your positive impact in the world. You may have great ideas that you’re passionate about that you work to bring to life. Or maybe there’s an idea pulling you that you won’t let yourself pursue for some reason.
Either way, sometimes you just have to trust the flow of the unknown. Make sure you know your guardrails and what lines you won’t cross, and then let go of the wheel for a minute to see what happens. Be ready in case things veer too far off-course, but don’t jump at the first sign of discomfort. For a lot of us, letting someone else drive causes a ton of anxiety, especially when it’s something as important as our own impact and legacy.
Trust it, though, and let things organically unfold. You’ll probably be glad you did.
