I learned this through my experience in the bakery industry, but the lessons learned and lived can transfer easily to many roles. As a DSD sales representative, I was an individual contributor. But my actions and practices, good or bad, impacted other departments’ efficiency. My service levels and customer relations impacted not only customer satisfaction on my route, but adjacent routes due to chain affiliations. And the revenue generated from my route impacted the profitably of the overall operation. My role was part of a larger organism.
If I managed my business well and without micromanagement, that left senior management with the peace of mind to concentrate elsewhere. Even with larger corporations, the senior management perspective is always a good guidepost on how an individual should execute to his/her role in the company.
