I write this on the eve of battle. It’s game time tomorrow, and I’m reflecting on my preparation…making sure I’m game-ready. After months of unknowns resulting in a cancer diagnosis, the treatment plan begins tomorrow morning. It’s go time.
We’re all on the eve of something great. Some of you have plans for a business or a non-profit, some for a community project, others for earning a promotion. We all have our eyes on something great (or wish we did). So let’s get our minds right as we charge into the road ahead.
In this moment and the months that led here, there’s things we can control and things we can’t. It doesn’t make any sense to waste time worrying about things I can’t control, like how my body will react to the treatment, how much work I’ll be able to take on, or which Monopoly strategy my brother will (unsuccessfully) attempt to deploy.
Instead, I’m focusing on what we can control – specifically, we know we’ll need support with meals, high 5s, boredom, pep talks, emotions on hard days, jokes, and maintaining normalcy. We’ve had an enormous army come together ready to help with each of these things. We know where we’re getting the high 5s, casseroles, broad shoulders, and book recommendations. With that focus, this team is as game-ready as possible, and you can’t ask for anything more than that.
As you envision the positive impact you want to leave on the world around you, hone your focus. Learn as much as you can about the potential obstacles, but accept that you’ll never learn everything. Then spend your time getting the tools and the support army you need for the road ahead.
Tomorrow morning is step one on the way to creating a great positive impact. Get yourself game-ready and go.
